Photography project for a university assignment (2014).
This project was a journey of understanding. Without having personally experienced depression, I can never truly represent what it is like to be depressed. However through much exploration I have endeavoured to challenge my own thinking on the subject and obtain a better understanding of the experience of depression.
My research and personal experience reinforce my belief that a lack of understanding around depression exists across society. This project enables me to discuss this illness openly with people who have first-hand experience of it, and to use the medium of photography to encourage people to challenge false perceptions and think more critically about what it may be like to experience depression.
The exhibition title ‘Inner Dialogue: Distorted Reality’ references the distorted perception of self that the images try to capture.
