Stories from Detention

Yoke was briefed to create a campaign that would entice audiences to see, feel and experience the exhibition ‘Stories from Detention’. This emotional and important exhibition explores how migration and diversity have shaped Australian society. It features the stories of people who now live in Australia, some who are on temporary visas, and others still held in detention on offshore processing location, Manus Island.

Using the powerful images from photographer Thomas Campbell and the incredible words from the interviewees, I created this postcard series. The campaign encouraged people to look beyond the negative labels, criticism and shame so often levelled at asylum seekers and refugees. Instead it focuses on the personal memories and stories of bravery and courage that make up the exhibition.

This campaign won the 2017 Avant Card Postcard Award.
